IQ - Geographies Builder

Apply filters to identify Geographies that meet your selected criteria.

Written by Maddie Wolfe

Overview

The IQ Geographies query builder allows you to generate a list of geographic areas that meet your applied criteria. In the Results tab you have the option to append additional data points to your final results.

Now you will be guided step-by-step on how to build a Geographies query.

First, start by selecting the Geographies tile on the builder tab.

You will then land on the Geographies page, and as a required step you must first select the type of geography you want your final results to reflect before you’re able to proceed and add filters. Until this section has been completed, all the other filters will be disabled and the right side (Summary Page) reads, “Please select a type of geography to begin.”

After you’ve chosen the Geography Type, the left side of the screen will allow you to select multiple filters based on where your geography is or any data surrounding it. The Summary Page will show you your starting count of total geographies and all of the filters you have applied. The filters will function the same as outlined in the My Locations category with two exceptions:

  • Places filters do not currently include Distance options.

  • There is not currently an option to define an area around a geography in the People filter. Those attributes are based on people within the selected geography type.

As filters are applied, the Summary Page is populated with options available within that filter. The query begins to build on the Summary Page as you select filter types.

Use the right side to update your statements to “OR” statements or to click into a filter to edit, duplicate, or delete a filter.

When a filter is applied, the number of filtered locations is updated on the Summary Page and on the results tab. At any point, you can click ‘Reset Query’ at the top of the Filter Details page.

You can choose to filter by as many or as few filters you would like. After selecting the Geography Type (the only required step), there is no order – you can click on any type of filter at any point during the process or go straight to the Results page.

That said, we do recommend applying the Geography filter as your next step to narrow results, especially if your selected Geography Type is an area smaller than a State, DMA, or CBSA. For example, applying a demographic filter to ZIP codes within a certain state would yield much faster results than applying it to all ZIP codes in the United States.

Geography Types

Selecting the type of geography you want to see in the results is a required first step. It must be completed before filters are applied.

Geography Types are broken out into three main categories within the high-level dropdown:

  • Standard U.S. Units

  • Territories

  • Trade Areas

Standard U.S. Units

If Standard U.S. Units is selected, you must then select the type of unit to be returned from the list of options below (single select):

  • Census Regions

  • Census Tracts

  • States

  • DMAs

  • CBSAs

  • Counties

  • Cities

  • ZIP Codes

  • Block Groups

Note: Queries run on Standard U.S. Units cannot have demographics or segmentation data added as a column in the query view.

Once the Apply button is clicked, the summary page updates to reflect the selections made.

Territories

If you chose to analyze Territories as the Geography Type, you have the option to filter across all of your Territories to narrow down your search by selecting specific Types or Groups of Territories. Simply flip the toggle to filter by a specific type of territory.

Note: SCOUT integration required to have access to this option. Territories must be pre-loaded into SCOUT.

After Types have been selected, the Apply button must be clicked in order to update the Summary Page as well as the count of how many Territories will be queried. If you wanted to select both specific Types and specific Groups, you would first need to click ‘Apply’ under the Types accordion before opening and selecting Groups.

Trade Areas

The Trade Area query option also requires the user to have a SCOUT subscription with Trade Areas pre-loaded into SCOUT. Trade Area types are broken out into two tabs with the following multi-select options:

  • Location Trade Areas – query the trade area around your locations.

  • Potential Analysis Trade Areas – query Buxton potential analysis results trade areas.
