Territories/Custom Polygons

Learn how to create and manage territories/polygons within SCOUT.

Written by Maddie Wolfe

Overview

The territory or custom polygon section contains the various polygon types that you or your team has created.

Note: These types can be made up of many individual or grouped geographies.  As seen below

By default you will only be able to view the polygons you have added from your username. To view all polygons throughout your company's users just click the collaborate to "ON" rather than "OFF".

Territory/Custom Polygon Types

*Note that in order to add more polygon types/groups you must be an Admin User. if you do not see this button at the bottom and need it please contact your account manager.

Add a new polygon type by clicking "+ Add New Type ". You can add in your new type with a description as well as add it to an existing group.

As an admin, you can also choose to restrict settings on the type to "admin only" from this menu.

Editing and Removing a Type

Edit or delete a type by selecting the "gear" icon on the map item.  You can edit the name, description, color, and opacity. You can also delete the type by selecting the option at the bottom left hand corner of the dialog box. This will effect all users in your company.

Editing an Existing Territory

You now have the ability to edit an existing territory in SCOUT by selecting additional polygons or deselecting any polygons that are a part of the original territory. Note: This only applies to territories created after the 11.30.23 SCOUT update.

Watch the video below to learn how:

Organizing Types into Groups

You may also add new groups, as an Admin user, to better organize your types if you find you have a long list of types.

Adding a Territory/Custom Polygon

Within SCOUT there are 2 methods for drawing polygons: A third method involves using shapefiles for bulk uploads, which is particularly useful for predefined geographic data.

  1. Free Draw

  2. Geography

Free Draw

Step 1: Right-click anywhere on the map and select "Add Territory/Custom Polygon"

The free draw option will be selected as a default in the top of the screen menu bar.

Step 2: Utilizing left-clicks, draw the desired territory (as big or as small as needed). Once you return to the start point the shape will fill in. Should you choose to, you can also make edits before clicking "Add".

Step 3: Once drawn to needed specifications select the activated green "Add" button. From the Add A New Territory/Polygon pane you can name your territory, select the territory type it needs to be assigned to, and fill any needed contact information. Once complete select the green "Add" button in the bottom right-hand corner.

You now have the ability to Explore, run a report, and edit your new custom territory

Geography

Step 1: Right-click anywhere on the map select "Add Territory/Polygon".

Choose the "Geography" option (the Free Draw option will be selected as a default in the top of the screen menu bar). To simplify the map view, open Map Settings (globe icon) and turn off unnecessary features. Additionally, enable the "Name" option under Display in the Active Items panel to make geography labels visible.

Step 2: Select a geography from the Boundaries group - or even create a drive time/ring. in this example, we are selecting Zip Codes. Use the search tool to locate specific ZIP Codes or Census Tract IDs, allowing you to quickly jump to the desired geography.

Step 3: Utilizing your mouse, single left click on each desired geography to save. Each boundary will highlight as you go.

Step 4: Select the green "Add" button and save the polygon in the desired type. From the Add A New Territory/Polygon pane you can name your territory, select the territory type it needs to be assigned to, and fill any needed contact information. Once complete select the green "Add" button in the bottom right-hand corner.

Override Color

This override feature gives you the ability to show each territory shape a separate color other than the default. This is especially helpful when you want to differentiate between polygons, but do not want different types. This option is available via the save menu or edit menu for your existing polygons.

After you've selected separate colors for your polygons, you can go to the "Active Items" tab and select the "Mode" for "Override Color". Selecting it will automatically change the color of the polygon you selected to the one you picked.

Uploading Polygons

To create polygons using a list of ZIP Codes or other geographic data, you can upload a shapefile. Ensure your data is converted into a shapefile format (.shp) with all necessary geographic information. Navigate to the territory creation section in SCOUT and upload the shapefile when prompted. Once uploaded, you can use the geography creation tools to create your shapes.

Tying Polygons To Sites

You also have the ability to link polygons (Free Draw or Geography) to your organization's specific locations. Right clicking on the site/pushpin will bring the sites option window onto the map. From here you will select the "Territories/Polygon" line item then the "Add Territory/Polygon" option. You will then be able to select the necessary territory type (Free Draw or Geography) and proceed to create as needed. By selecting the "show" option, you will only see the polygons associated with that location.
