Overview
SCOUT provides several ways to identify healthcare competitors and visualize their locations within a trade area or other defined geography. The best method depends on the type of competitor you are looking for and the data available within your SCOUT account.
If you have access to the Healthcare Data Package, you can identify healthcare facilities and providers using Healthcare Points of Interest. You can also use the SCOUT Search feature to find specific competitors, specialties, or services, or explore the Businesses category within Buxton Data to locate supported organizations and industries.
These methods can be used individually or together to build a more complete view of the competitive healthcare landscape within a market.
Identify Competitors Using Healthcare Points of Interest:
If you have access to the Healthcare Data Package, healthcare facilities and providers are available in the Points of Interest section under the Healthcare tab. This data allows you to identify and visualize healthcare locations within a trade area or other defined geography.
Healthcare Points of Interest include Hospitals, with 12 unique types covering general acute and specialty hospital facilities; Healthcare Facilities, with 80 facility types organized into five categories; Medical Providers, with 240 specialties, subspecialties, and allied health provider types across 40 categories; and Dental Providers, with seven unique provider types.
Use these categories to identify healthcare organizations and providers relevant to your analysis and visualize their locations in relation to your selected market or trade area.
Identify Competitors Using Search:
You can also use the Search feature in SCOUT to identify healthcare competitors. This option is particularly useful when you are looking for a named competitor, specialty, service, or other location that may not be available through your existing Buxton data. Enter the applicable competitor name, specialty, service, or other relevant search term into Search and review the available internet-based results. Relevant locations can then be added to the map so you can visualize them in relation to your trade area or other selected geographies.
If you want to continue tracking locations identified through Search, you can add them to a Pushpin layer. This allows you to maintain a collection of relevant competitor locations for future analysis.
Identify Competitors Using Businesses:
Another option is the Businesses category within the Buxton Data section of SCOUT. Businesses allows you to search and visualize location data for large organizations, including more than 5,600 retail brands, retail health categories, and businesses organized by NAICS code.
If the competitor you are researching is included in the available business data, add the applicable locations to the map for visualization. You can also add available competitors to Competition Cotenants within the Your Data section for ongoing tracking and identification.
If a competitor is not available through the Businesses category, use the Search feature to locate the organization instead.
Choosing a Method for Competitive Analysis:
The method you use depends on what you are trying to identify. Healthcare Points of Interest provides healthcare-specific facility and provider data and is best suited for analyzing competitors by facility type, specialty, or provider category. This data requires access to the Healthcare Data Package.
Search provides more flexibility when you need to locate a specific organization, specialty, service, or competitor that is not available through existing Buxton data. Businesses is useful when you want to identify supported organizations, retail health categories, or businesses based on NAICS classifications.
You can also combine these methods when a single data source does not provide a complete picture of the healthcare competition within your market.
